FIELD TO FINISHED MAP

Site evaluation maps in hours, not weeks.

Pedon turns parcel data and lidar elevation into contours, slope classification, and finished soil maps. Built for licensed soil scientists working under Tennessee regulations, and for anyone who needs to know whether a piece of ground can be built on.

THE CURRENT WORKFLOW

A base map, a pencil, and a week of waiting.

A soil scientist cannot draw a delineation without a topographic base map. Today that means commissioning one from an engineering firm, waiting for it to come back, then drawing map units by hand with a handwritten legend in the margin. Every revision starts the process over.

The finished map goes to the health department for a subsurface sewage disposal permit. It is a dated, signed, professional document, and it should not take a week of calendar time to produce.

FOR LICENSED SOIL SCIENTISTS

Everything from the parcel to the signed map.

Parcel lookup

Search by parcel ID, owner, address, or tap the map. Multi parcel projects combine tracts into a single site boundary.

Contours from lidar

Generated from USGS 3DEP elevation at 2, 5, 10, and 20 foot intervals. Validated against a sealed survey plat.

Slope classification

Classified against TDEC thresholds with per class acreage clipped to the parcel boundary. Threshold sets change with map intensity.

Field data capture

Boring logs with horizons, Munsell swatches, redox features, and derived restrictive, seasonal high water table, and usable depths.

Pit descriptions

The full description form, with the fields that can be derived filled in for you. Photos attach to the observation with GPS from the image.

Digital delineation

Draw map units freehand, by vertex, or by selecting existing polygons. Absorption rates attach to depth ranges and come from Appendix I.

Overlays that matter

FEMA flood zones with floodway distinguished from AE, national wetlands inventory, USGS hydrography, and SSURGO soils.

Works without signal

Field data captures offline and syncs when you are back in range. Pre cache a project before you leave the truck.

Export at true scale

Vector PDF at a verified scale, and DXF in State Plane feet with contours at true elevation for CAD.

BUILT ON THE RULES

Anchored to TDEC Rules 0400-48-01 and the Soils Handbook of Tennessee.

Absorption rates come from Appendix I by soil series, never derived from texture and never guessed. Slope thresholds change with map intensity and system type. Pedon encodes the rules so the map you produce is defensible, and leaves every professional judgment to the professional making it.

Pedon is a mapping and analysis tool. It does not make regulatory determinations.

FOR BUILDERS, DEVELOPERS, AND AGENTS

Know what the ground will allow before you commit.

  1. Buildable envelope report

Slope, flood, wetlands, and road frontage combined into the developable area, with constrained acreage subtracted. One parcel in, one report out.

  2. Driveway grade

Draw a route from the road to a proposed pad and get the profile, the maximum grade, and total rise. In steep country this is the number that kills deals.

  3. Terrain analysis

Cut and fill volume for a pad at a chosen elevation, and viewshed to see which parts of a tract look out at something worth paying for.

  4. Share a link, not an attachment

Send a client a live map instead of a PDF in an email. Reports carry your branding.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Find the parcel

Search or tap. Add adjoining tracts if the site spans more than one.

  2. Generate the terrain

Contours, slope, flood, wetlands, and hydrography, clipped to the boundary.

  3. Do the work

Capture field data, describe pits, draw delineations, or place proposed features.

  4. Deliver it

Export a true scale PDF or DXF, or send a share link.

SEE IT

The published survey said no. The soil said otherwise.

Nineteen acres in Sevier County. The published soil survey maps the whole property as unsuitable: flooding along the bottom, rock too shallow on the slopes. Field work found just under an acre that is neither, a colluvial bench with no restriction to five feet. That is where the system goes, and no desk study would have found it.

A job leaves with two documents. The map says where the ground changes. The report says what was in the holes.

Soil map

Four map units drawn where the ground changes, two-foot contours, and fourteen borings and pits located on the sheet. Units print transparent, the way a county receives them.

Field data report

Fifteen pages: a page per hole with its full pedon description and horizons, and three percolation tests with every thirty-minute reading behind the rate.

Open the field report

A worked example on a real parcel. The terrain and the soil series are the ones mapped here; the borings and readings are written for the demonstration, and both documents are marked as samples rather than signed. No account needed.

GET IN TOUCH

Tell me what you are working on.

Pedon is early and I work directly with the people using it. If you are a soil scientist, a builder, or an agent in East Tennessee, get in touch and I will show you what it does on one of your own parcels.

Pedon is built and run by Zach Keenen.
